Advanced Research Methods of Performing Arts

This course aims to familiarize the PhD students with the research papers and methodology related to performing arts, so that the students will be able to make deeper analysis and discussion on issues and complete a paper meeting the standards and requirements for journal submission.

Theory and Application in Performing Arts

The course focuses on the theories of performing arts and discusses their present applications, including the important theories of the single field, status quo of the interdisciplinary performing research, the application of each theory to performing analysis, the application of the cross-subjects to the performing analysis, and the innovative discussions on the interdisciplinary theories.

 

II. Elective Courses

(I) Seminar

Seminar on Music Historiography

This course focuses on the academic topics that combine the fields of musicology and history and further connect the academic discussion on music historiography. The course contents are related to two academic fields. Therefore, the course will proceed by starting with the research and theories of history, then acquaint the students with each field in the system division of musicology, and further have a comprehensive discussion on historical musicology and music historiography. It is hoped that students will have some understanding about the interdisciplinary academic direction and apply it to their future academic writing. At the same time, it is expected to broaden the students’ academic horizons.

The important and influential playwrights or directors in the history of drama are selected. Through the background study, text analysis, and value discussion of their works, this course will train students to develop their creative academic opinions with depth and breadth on the history of drama.

Seminar on Chinese Opera Historiography

Through organization, debate and discussion, the seminar on the topics such as the development of Chinese Opera historiography and its controversy, historical concepts, and divisions is expected to enable students to have a deeper understanding of Chinese Opera historiography and benefit themselves from the research.

Seminar on Dance Historiography

The important and influential dancers in the history of drama are selected. Through the background study, textual analysis, and value discussion of their works, this course will train students to develop their creative academic opinions with depth and breadth on the history of dance.

Seminar on Contemporary Performance

Important and influential works are selected in terms of their representativeness of performing arts. Through characteristic analysis, artistic value discussion, and aesthetic theory discussion, this course will train students to develop their analysis on the contemporary works of performing arts with the academic value.

Seminar on Classic Work in Performing Arts

The course studies on the aesthetics of classic works in performing arts and comments on them. The PhD students will develop the abilities of analyzing performing arts and of forming their own discourses. Through the studies on the theory and practice of performing arts, the course will guide students to rightfully cultivate aesthetic concepts on performing arts and analytical and critical abilities through the basic logics of analysis, combination, and judgment.

Seminar on Chinese and Western Dramatic Theory

The course will study on some frameworks and basic concepts of the Chinese and Western dramatic theories, discuss their contribution and confinement, and further make applications to practical criticism.

Seminar on Greek Theatre

In terms of the performing style, content, and the development of drama theory, Greek theatre has a crucial influence on contemporary drama. Therefore, there are a large number of research papers on it. Through the related papers, this course will discuss the theatrical characteristics, research methods, and discourses at that time to develop the PhD students’ unique points of view on research.

This course aims at the perspectives of structure, performance, form, and acting of Chinese drama and discusses the representative works of the major Chinese drama theorists and the related issues. Through detailed reading, presentation, and discussion, the students will have a deep and comprehensive understanding of the development and context of the Chinese drama theory.

Through discussion on the theories and methods of important fields in dance studies, this course will guide the PhD students to integrate the theories and methods of dance historiography, dance sociology, and dance analysis and develop the dance research method meeting the need of the present stage.

Interpretation Seminar of Performing Arts

This course aims to guide the PhD students through the theory and methodology of hermeneutics to have a reasonable interpretation and understanding about the documents and phenomenon of performing arts, construct the perspectives covering both time and space and the contextual background, and further connect and reflect on the interpretation of the events of contemporary performing arts.

This course studies on the directing method and production of Western classic opera to cultivate the PhD students’ ability to make analyses and discourses. The focus on discussion of theory and practice will guide students to establish the thinking, analytical, and creative abilities of opera aesthetics.

Seminar on Oriental and Western Theater with Songs and Music

This course studies on the aesthetics and comments of the classic works in the Oriental and Western theatre with songs and music to cultivate the PhD students’ ability to make analyses and discourses. The focus on discussion of theory and practice will guide students to rightfully establish the aesthetic concept of theatre with songs and music and the ability to make analysis and criticism through the basic logic of analysis, combination, and judgment. Through the characteristic analysis, artistic value discussion, and aesthetic theory discussion of the works of famous playwrights, the students will be trained to propose their arguments on the contemporary works with academic value.

Ballet Creation Methods and Production

The discussion on the related theories and methods of the writing and production of ballets will be focused on the content, form, and skill of the works. This course will guide the PhD students to analyze the connection between plot framework, characters, choreography, music creation, and theatre design to understand the writing and performing characteristics of the ballets of different styles.

Research on New performing of Music

The course studies on the new music performing types in the 21st century by referring to the performing records of the foreign groups and personally visiting the domestic shows. In terms of the assisting teaching materials, we will analyze their features, effects, and aesthetic value of the performing types through group discussion.

Seminar on Elizabethan Drama

The development of British drama in the 16th and 17th centuries has a significant influence on contemporary drama. Therefore, there are a large number of research papers dealing with the works from that period of time. This course will discuss the theatrical characteristics, research methods, discourses at that time to establish the PhD students’ unique research perspectives.

Research on Tanztheater

Through the discussion on the theories and methods of the important fields in Tanztheatre, this course will focus on the works of famous playwrights of Tanztheatre to guide the PhD students to combine theory and practice and discuss the interrelation between dance creation, performance, and interpretation.

Seminar on Contemporary Theatre

Important and influential works are selected in terms of the representativeness of contemporary performing arts. Through the characteristic analysis, artistic value discussion, and aesthetic theory discussion, this course will train students to propose their won arguments with academic value regarding the contemporary performing works.

Aesthetics of Performing Arts

This course aims to guide the students to understand the development, categories, and meaning of aesthetics of performing arts from diverse angles and further develop their deeper aesthetic and critical thinking abilities on performing arts. There are three major stages: The first stage is to know the aesthetic principles. The second stage is to study the performing theories and discuss the techniques. The third stage focuses on the appreciation and discourses on individual works or performing styles. 

Application and Practice of Performing Arts Technology

From different viewpoints of art and technology, this course aims to guide the PhD students to discuss the form, practice, and future development of the technological application of performing arts, construct the artistic value and aesthetic features, and further influence the future development combining performing arts and technology.

Through acquaintance with the essence of creative elements in interdisciplinary performing arts as well as document reading and real practice, the students will develop in-depth research ability on music composition and performance. This course will guide the PhD students to combine music composition, music aesthetics, and musical theories and methods to explore the theory and practice of interdisciplinary music composition.

Research on Interdisciplinary Approach in Theatre Production

Through acquaintance with the essence of creative elements in interdisciplinary performing arts as well as document reading and real practice, the students will develop in-depth research ability on drama texts, theatre creation, and ritual performance. This course will guide the PhD students to combine drama creation, theatrical aesthetics as well as the theories on drama studies to cultivate the PhD students’ academic viewpoints on interdisciplinary drama.

“Transdiscipline” is one of the important approaches in the modernization of contemporary Chinese opera. This course plans to make textual analysis and theoretical discussion on “transdiscipline.” By reading plays, appreciating performances, organizing theories, making presentations, and having discussions, the students will acquaint themselves with the theories and develop the ability to comment on works in terms of the transdisciplinary creative approach in contemporary Chinese opera.

Based on the cross-culture performing theories, this course will guide the PhD students to analyze the characteristics of each performing culture, explore the diverse cultural perspectives and meanings of contemporary performances, prove the aesthetic concepts, and objectively propose the academic views.

The historical, social, cultural, and environmental changes are considered to have yielded a variety of cultural exchange, hybridity, changes, and integration and presented the complex and diverse perspectives. Through discussion on important issues of the cross-culture dance phenomena at home and abroad, this course will guide the PhD students to reflect on the contemporary aesthetics, historical, social, and cultural meaning of cross-culture dance.

Creative and Culture policy of Performing Arts

Through “field studies,” “field trips,” “cooperative learning,” and “issue debating,” this course will enable the PhD students to have a reflection and comparison on the national level (central government’s policies), urban level (district policies), and county level (local policies) in terms of the key perspectives of policy making, policy enforcement (including software and hardware engagement), policy efficacy, and policy evaluation in the cultural policies related to performing arts/performing arts industry by means of the focused and concrete “experience and thinking.”

Seminar on Culture Ecology of Performing Arts

By analyzing the economic supply and demand in the cultural industry of performing arts and the situation of the job market, this course will enable the PhD students to propose their academic views on the cultural ecology related to performing arts/performing arts industry through the focused and concrete market status quo.

Independent Study

The instructor will guide the PhD students to co-organize the study project every year together with the MA students or BA students, or through team teaching to build up academic capacity and benefit both teaching and learning.
